The conversation with American people from varied kinds

of the fields during the artworks solo show in America

Jones Terry, the director ofNew York multi-culture art center

Jones Terry: After enjoying your picture, I feel wonderful, It is the first time for me to see the Chinese artists¡¯wonderful masterpieces. Now I would like to ask you how the Chinese artists think about the western classical art and modern art.

Di lifeng: Western classical works are still the ones we keep studying. They are our example, but we will do what we can do today, I paint modern peole in the modern time and study the character of modern people and their contemporary spirits. At present, the tools and materials are changing, That is the problem that all the artists are changing, That is the problem that all the artists are fa cing with, but I am quite sure of myself and can do it much better.

Jones Terry: Why did you choose Qing Dynasty, as you¡¯re painting subject? Where did you select your models? How did you get the dress and design the hair-style? How did you make the background of the picture? Does the Chinese ink painting of mountains and rivers influence you?

Di lifeng: The subject of Qing Dynasty is a kind of charming thing in my life that I often dream of. Maybe it was times that was full of dramatic changes, it was times when the last emperor given up the throne. It was as age full of blood and fire, swords and spears, and an age full of democratic revolutions. Very attractive. Although I pain the subject of Qing Dynasty, yet in fact, I choose modern people as my models, they are my friends, classmates and actors and actress. The dress and prop are the antique of Qing Dynasty. Sure, the spirits and souls of the paintings are deeply influ-enced by Chinese traditional painting and eastern style, but the oil painting language should express all of these .

Tones Terry: What impact you most during you stays in America? What do you plan to do next? Do you think your style and subject will change a little bit ?

Di lifeng: During my art show in America, I have got excellent reactions. £Íy artworks are highly praised. Morn people pointed out that it is unbelievable to have such an outstanding artists and artworks in China. The works are successfully made in western technique with eastern colors and moods. It is really amazing. Some of the first class galleries have signed the art show contract with me .Some collectors wanted to collect my works. That is to say the Chinese artists¡¯ oil painting have been recognized and appreciated by American people. After arriving in America, I have changed a little and it has been displayed in the subject of the painting, for example, I have painted some American portrait and so on. I think there will be fewer differences between my main subject and western subject, because I express the same feeling of kindness and love. You know human being¡¯heart and soul are closely linked. I think I can go into it and create more brand new works. It is not difficult for

Di lifeng added to his works senses of haziness and mystery, especially his own image also appears in the painting to mingle the history with the present, which enhances the significance of it

Querulous Dirge Moving Scene

Every man longs for a true and full life without any trammels, Unfortunately, various aims shackle our minds, Di Lifeng, an oil painter, has spent countless mornings and evenings thinking of the difficulties and hardships he had never experienced, such as dynastic changes, rise and fall of each emperor, honor or disgrace of imperial concubines, fortune of eunuches and maids All these facts make him sad as a child. There always exist conversations in his deep heart with the figures he attempts to depict, sometimes, acting as a moderner, somertimes, as Pu Yi, the last emperor of China, or as an imperial kingsmen. He never intends to demote or extol what they have done, instead, what he is crazy about is their legendary life experiences that sound splendid but tragic. Maybe he dreams of experiencing and understanding Pu Yi's having no choice and Wan Rong's (the last empress) heartbroken life. As a man, he also sighs with feeling to eunuches' loyalty. In other words, the Qing Dynasty wouldn't have left us so many colorful and magnificent memories without these happenings. Whatever happened in the past, as a descendant of an oriental country with an ancient civilization, he has no intention to show off the history or laugh at the ancients, instead, he pays close attention to the fortune of these people, and is willing to pay any price to experience in the vast space. He sincerely hopes to share the happiness with all of his friends.

Let us encourage each other in our endeavors!
